Honoring those we’ve lost on Memorial Day

Dear Helias Catholic family,

Memories. So many memories in our nation’s history of people who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that you and I may live in freedom. Today we take time to remember the brave men and women who have fought the good fight. How can we ever properly show our heartfelt gratitude to all those who have died defending our country? Certainly by never forgetting that freedom is never free. Each one of us is called to honor our fallen brothers and sisters in the military and to do all we can to make sure their sacrifice is never forgotten. Thank you to everyone who has offered their lives in service to our country; you will never be forgotten.

Tragically, the past week once again brought an unspeakable evil to our country. The school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, has left a gaping wound in our collective hearts. When will this chaos ever end? What can we do to stop that which seems sadly a routine part of our culture? Each one of us is duty-bound to look deep within our hearts and to ask ourselves the question: who are we as a nation? How should we respond to such evil? I believe that the people we remember today sacrificed their lives so that we all might live in peace.

Thank you, God, for the blessing of those who over the years have laid down their lives for us. Please continue to guide us toward the light of your love. We trust in your enduring and consoling presence in the lives of those who have lost loved ones, especially the families who have lost children through acts of violence. May we never forget our fallen brothers and sisters. And may we never forget your call to each one of us to walk in the path of your son, Jesus, our Lord and brother.

Live, Jesus, in our hearts — forever!
