Trusting in God’s love these final weeks of Lent
Dear Helias Catholic family,
The daily life of a school community has a certain pace to it that can at times make it challenging to slow down to take a deep breath and simply relax. Just look at our weekly school calendar, and you will see what I mean. And here we are in the final weeks of Lent, anxiously awaiting the return of spring and the great celebration of Easter. Yet we have more work to do before we arrive at Easter Sunday.
I have been thinking about the theme of “Trust the Desert” that our Helias Catholic Campus Ministry program has been highlighting these past weeks of Lent. There is a vivid image in my mind of a single soul wandering through the desert — a feeling of being all alone, struggling against the challenges such a journey brings. I have been finding it difficult to see where the word “trust” fits in this picture. Rationally, I understand that we are never alone, that God is always with us. Yet emotionally, Lent can bring a feeling of separation from God. This experience is not unique among many of my family, friends and colleagues. My daily prayer is one asking God for the ability to see Him more clearly in my life and to trust in His love for me.

On a lighter note, our school community gathered two weeks ago to enjoy an outstanding performance of “West Side Story.” The cast and crew were simply marvelous! Our Helias Catholic community is so blessed with many talented individuals, both on the stage and behind the scenes. The annual spring musical also presented an opportunity to gather the cast and crew members of Helias Catholic’s 1968 and 1975 productions before the Saturday night performance, a time filled with joy and sharing of many memories. Thanks to all our alumni who came to support this year’s Crusader cast and crew, and thanks, too, to Ron Vossen for his continued ground-breaking work as Helias Catholic’s director of alumni relations.
May God continue to shower us with His love and His abiding presence in our daily lives. Rest assured that our prayers remain with you and your loved ones. Thank you for your support of our Catholic mission!
Live, Jesus, in our hearts — forever!
