A time of celebration and remembrance at Helias Catholic

Dear Helias Catholic family,

Halloween. All Saints’ Day. All Souls’ Day. So many memories of each one of these days. When I was a child Halloween was called “trick or treating.” We used pillowcases for our bags, and our costumes were nothing like the elaborate costumes of today. My childhood neighborhood was filled with families whose children all attended the local Catholic school — some 1,200 of us! All Saints’ Day was always a free day, then back to school and to Mass on All Souls’ Day, which always felt very somber. In my home, my dad’s birthday was on All Souls’ Day; our birthday celebration for my dad was always a bit muted given the feast of All Souls.

Perhaps you, too, are recalling your own childhood memories today. Hopefully, for those of you who are alumni of Helias Catholic or are parents of Helias Catholic students, your memories of today and the following two days include our school community. Today our students are in their best orange and black Halloween attire. Tomorrow we will have an all-school Mass on the feast of All Saints, then on Wednesday we will pause to remember our departed loved ones who now rest in the loving embrace of God.

Whatever your memories of today and the coming days might be, I hope your home is filled with a spirit of gratitude and love. Our community continues to be blessed beyond measure. Daily success in learning and developing our hearts and minds in Helias Catholic’s classrooms, success in our athletic endeavors these past weeks, service to our community, and time spent in prayer and reflection are among the many blessings God has bestowed on us.

Thank you for your continued support of our Catholic mission. Our community continues to hold you and your loved ones in our daily prayers.

Live, Jesus, in our hearts — forever!
