Chasing 158

Eli Homan has a chance to do something that has never before been done by a Helias wrestler, pass not only the record mark of 157, but also achieve the 175 win mark. This season marks the end of a very successful wrestling career at Helias. He is a 2 time district champ and has placed at state 3 times including two 3rd place finishes and one 5th place finish. Homan is very confident that he will be able to break the record and is looking forward to a successful postseason. Despite the buzz about breaking the record, Homan was unaware that's where the mark was at.
“I didn't know the record was 157, so I’m pumped now that you told me that. It's definitely doable. I'm very confident this season I've been working hard all off season, making sure I'm in shape and ready to go for the postseason.”
Homan says he has what it takes to win the state championship, although it won't be easy.
“I know who I'm going to end up wrestling in the state championship - the kid is tough. I've wrestled him before. So I just have to keep grinding and make sure he can't beat me.”
After high school, Homan will be continuing his wrestling career at the University of Central Missouri. He is excited about that opportunity and was very pleased with the recruiting process.
“The recruiting process has been a great journey, and, actually, since I've committed to UCM, I've actually had a couple division one teams reach out. I'm going to stick with UCM though. I want to stay loyal and committed to the school because I made a promise to the coach.”
Homan will wrestle with a chance to surpass the record Wednesday, January 21 at Helias Catholic High School against crosstown rival Jefferson City Jays.
Writer's Note: Homen did break the record against the Jays on January 21 securing his place in the Helias Catholic record books.
