Helias Catholic High School’s National Honor Society inducted 68 new members and 53 returning members on Friday, November 1, following the school’s All Saints Day Mass.

The National Honor Society recognizes senior and junior students who have distinguished themselves in the areas of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. NHS is a nationwide organization under the auspices of the National Association of Secondary School Principals; earning this distinction denotes excellence.

During the induction ceremony, four senior NHS members, chosen by faculty, presented gifts signifying the four NHS pillars:

• Claire Cassmeyer was chosen to represent scholarship, which is characterized by a commitment to learning. She presented a textbook.
• Richard Mosha was chosen to represent leadership, which is characterized by taking the initiative to aid others in a wholesome manner and to sacrifice personal interests to yield to the needs of others. He presented a varsity letter H.
• Matthew Liebsch was chosen to represent character, which is the product of constantly striving to make the right choices and demonstrating respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness and citizenship. He presented a Bible.
• Lauren Mathews was chosen to represent service, which is characterized by the willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without compensation or recognition. She presented a crucifix.

During the induction ceremony, all new and returning members recited the NHS pledge to uphold these principles.
